Meeting the Musical Moment in Care Homes
Meeting the Musical Moment in Care Homes – professional development workshops for musicians
Run by Rights Made Real in partnership with Luminate, these two free workshops will explore a personalised – and mobile – approach to leading music activities in care homes. We will consider how shared music-making with individuals and small groups around the home can be particularly engaging for people living with dementia. With this approach, each activity lasts just as long as the moment does.
Session information (we’d encourage you to attend both if possible)
- Monday 16th May, 2pm to 4pm: we will explore the difference this kind of approach can make when working with people living with dementia, and will focus on the skills that are needed to work in this way
- Monday 27th June, 2pm to 4pm: a discussion focusing on participants’ experiences of working in care homes and/or with people living with dementia in other contexts. We will consider what would be needed to introduce and develop this more individualised approach in Scottish care homes
Workshop leader
The sessions will be led by Dr Jane Bentley, who has over 20 years’ experience of working with people with dementia, including leading the Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s ‘Reconnect’ project and working closely with the NHS developing music in continuing care with older people. Jane is a Senior Atlantic Fellow of the Global Brain Health Institute. The approach which Jane will share in these workshops was inspired by working with French arts organisation, Musique & Santé. See https://artbeatmusic.org/ for information on Jane’s work, and https://www.musique-sante.org/en for information about Musique & Santé.
Our partner for this, Rights Made Real, is a collaborative initiative that works to enhance the human rights of older people living in care homes, including older people’s right to participate in a cultural life. See http://rightsmadereal.org.uk/.
