Casting Off book launch

Around 40 people gathered at the Dornoch Social Club on Sunday to hear Philip Paris explain how his play Casting Off, which toured last autumn under the Luminate umbrella, turned into a novel that he is promoting during this year's festival.

"The first performance of the play took place on October 2nd and exactly twelve months to the day I was standing in that same hall reading from the paperback, Casting Off... it's been quite a year!" he says. "The story of residents in a Highland care home, firstly rebelling because of the rise in fees (they barricade themselves into the lounge) and then having to devise ways to raise money so they can all remain together, seems to have captured people's imagination."

The 45 minute talk included readings from the book, along with anecdotes and stories that kept the audience laughing most of the time. The lively question and answer session was followed by a book signing and refreshments, with home baking by Philip's wife Catherine. Donations for these raised £140 for the charity Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.

On Friday 7 October Philip Paris will be signing copies of his book at The Old High School in Beauly, and there will be another book reading & signing on Friday 21 October at Nairn bookshop.
