Based in Cumbernauld, David’s writing project tells the newly discovered stories of his grandfather, Cuthbert. His bursary allowed David to work with a mentor – Elizabeth Reeder, novelist and creative writing lecturer – to progress his outline into a working draft. It also allowed him to travel for research to the Highland Archive, Inverness, the National Library of Scotland, and sites and library collections in the Borders as he learnt more about Cuthbert’s early career in Edwardian theatre, service with the Machine Gun Corps in France and Russia, and time as a Scottish country schoolmaster.
“The bursary helped me to confirm my confidence in the project, and through the mentoring sessions, to identify and take the initial necessary practical steps in the creative process. All I need to do now is put in the hard work to finish it.”
