“This project, ‘Art Adventures in Nature’ celebrates the world around us by nurturing playful exploration and creativity in the great outdoors. It was a real pleasure to spend time with each resident learning about their lives and adapting each workshop to their interests with an emphasis on creating a relaxed fun environment to learn new processes and embrace the explorative nature of creativity.”

A Tree to Look Up: Leaf designs using foraged finds whose shapes were etched onto perspex, and connected to perspex trees, showcasing the many different tree varieties along the trail. A mirror allows visitors to study the tree canopy above them.

A Gift of a Morning: A ‘sunrise’ made from three perspex circles playing with light and reflection. The sculpture was inspired by a poetry workshop.

Flock ‘n’ Folk: Inspired by the journeys residents’ have made in their lives, with each being reflected by a bird’s flight path. Patterns have been burnt into wood topped with birds hand-carved from basswood with their plumage dipped in colourful acrylic paint.

Here and There: Inspired by stones and minerals from around the world, and how they make us curious about the world’s diverse landscapes. The shapes of countries are marked on perspex, and reflected in a mirror to mimic geological layers alongside local stone samples and some from further away.

Tomorrow Land: This sculpture was inspired by a resident’s happy memory of playing on the street as a child and, as an adult, watching younger generations grow up. This sculpture is designed for all ages to enjoy making new landscapes together. Painted plywood shapes can be moved and slotted together to create different sculptural ‘tomorrow lands.’

“This project valued getting outdoors, working with natural materials and tapping into residents’ adventurous spirit. Some of the most memorable and rewarding moments were seeing a person’s creativity really flourish through an activity that you had developed in response to their interests and abilities; moments of shared focus, of working together, often without words, as creative equals; as curious minds immersed in the moment, there could be great joy in those moments.”

For the Journeys: This sculpture is themed around the journeys we make throughout our lives and the joys of travelling. An etched design includes maps referencing places around the world, along with clay and carved stone pieces reflecting some of the far-flung places that have been part of residents’ experience.

For the Sky at Night: This sculpture is all about the wonder of the night sky, the full moon shining bright above us and the stars that have inspired artists and poets throughout the ages. It has been created using resin, along with coloured ceramic and mirror pieces, representing stars.

For the Sea: This sculpture captures the movement of sand, waves, and water to represent our relationship with the sea – from a day trip ‘doon the watter’ to Rothesay, to a voyage across the mighty oceans of the deep!

For the Stones: The white resin sculpture is full of fragments of soapstone used to create the impression of mountain peaks and landscapes. Stone sculptures reference ancient standing stones and has space for additional stones to be added by visitors.
