Coming Back Out Ball and Social Dance Clubs

Since 2019, LGBTI+ Elders Social Dance Clubs for the whole rainbow community have been held monthly across Scotland, moving online during 2020. They culminated in The Coming Back Out Ball – an interactive, online event on Saturday, 26th June 2021, to celebrate LGBTI+ elders across Scotland, the UK and internationally.

Two ‘Sunday Socials’ were held in July and August 2021 – an opportunity for those who enjoyed the Coming Back Out Ball and Dance Clubs to be part of the next stage of the journey, and for new people to join.

A glorious celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Gender Diverse, and Intersex elders

National Theatre of Scotland

This project is a National Theatre of Scotland and All The Queens Men Co-production, in partnership with Eden Court and Luminate and in association with Glasgow City Council.

The original Coming Back Out Ball and Social Dance Clubs were pioneered in Australia by All The Queens Men.

The project was then started in Scotland following discussions where many older LGBTI+ people said they feared they may ‘return to the closet’ as they lose independence with age, particularly if they need to rely on carers or residential care. The project aims to strengthen the LGBTI+ over 50s community and promotes their visibility and safety.

This is the first time that this radical community-focused project has been created and shared outside of Australia.
