Share and connect: Luminate’s autumn social

Join us at Summerhall on Wednesday 16th September 2026 for an evening of conversation, connection and creative ageing.

At 5pm, choreographer and performer Christine Thynne will share her inspiring journey from taking up dance after retiring from her first career, to receiving a Luminate bursary and collaborating on a performance that has toured across Scotland and internationally.

Arrive from 4.30pm to enjoy a complimentary drink, catch up with familiar faces and meet new people. There will be plenty of time to chat before and after Christine’s talk, and a private bar will be available if you’d like to purchase additional refreshments.

This informal event is open to anyone involved in creative ageing, including artists, creatives, performers, staff from cultural, community and care organisations, and others supporting creativity in later life.

Artist biography: Christine Thynne

An emerging dance maker and sea kayaker, Christine originally trained as a physiotherapist in the 1960s and went on to teach ‘Movement to Music’, anatomy and massage. A member of Dance Base’s PRIME group, she has worked and performed with many Scotland-based artists, bringing her extensive experience of movement, anatomy and embodied practice into her creative work.

In 2022, at the age of 80, Christine began to explore her own choreographic practice through a Luminate Bursary, initiating research into solo work and developing a distinctive movement language rooted in her experience, curiosity and physicality. This research evolved into These Mechanisms, which Christine co-created and performs in collaboration with Robbie Synge, marking the latest chapter in a progressive creative partnership spanning more than a decade.

Their collaboration has included Ensemble (2018), which was selected for Aerowaves 2019 and shortlisted for a Total Theatre Award as part of Made in Scotland 2019. These Mechanisms continues this shared exploration of movement, ageing, physicality and human connection, placing Christine’s lived experience and creative voice at the heart of the work.

Since its creation, Christine has toured These Mechanisms nationally and internationally to critical acclaim, establishing her as an exciting and distinctive emerging voice. Her work challenges perceptions of age, creativity and physical possibility, demonstrating that artistic exploration and physical expression can continue to evolve throughout life.
