Arts and Ageing Gathering

Luminate’s Arts and Ageing Gathering was held in Edinburgh on 28th March 2023. Here are recordings of the three keynote speeches given at the start of the day.

Anne Gallacher, Luminate Director, reflected on a growing emphasis on a ‘medical model’ of ageing. And although arts and health programmes are important and impactful, the arts are much more than a ‘fix’ for the challenges of particular conditions.

Dr Donald Macaskill, Scottish Care Chief Executive, spoke of how the creative arts allow people to express themselves fully, regardless of circumstance. To “live life to the full, until the end”.

Our final speaker was performer Liz Aggiss, who gave a personal reflection of her life as an older performer. In her words: “As an artist I chose to meet the gaze of others with active provocation … my performance work is not neutral: it is populist, funny and vulgar …”
